Motivated Testimony

MAIN IDEA
Motivation plays a significant role in driving our actions. The acknowledgement of Christ as our source of motivation will strengthen us, and we must find ourselves in submission, allowing His light to shine through us, illuminating the darkness in this world as His witnesses.

BACKGROUND
The Apostle John, author of the Gospel of John in the New Testament, introduces Jesus Christ and lays the theological foundation of His deity, affirming that Jesus is God. John the Baptist is mentioned as one who paves the way for Jesus.

THE SOURCE OF OUR MOTIVATION
The Apostle John uses the term “Word” to describe Jesus Christ. The source of our motivation is Jesus Christ, for He is God. He has always existed prior to creation, was part of the creation of this world, and is eternal with no end. He is the Alpha and Omega, the first and the last. This doctrine is known as the “Trinity,” where there is one God but three Persons: God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit.

STRENGTH OF OUR MOTIVATION
Not only is Jesus the “Word,” but He is also the “Light.” Through Jesus, every person can have life because He is the Light. Light is powerful and bright, shining away all darkness from this world. When one has Light in their soul, they are strengthened in their faith, finding hope, answers, fulfillment of the void within their heart, and deflecting darkness.

SUBMISSION TO OUR MOTIVATION
John the Baptist was sent by God to pave the way for the coming Savior. John was aware of his position and responsibility, and he fully submitted to God’s call upon his life. He was not concerned about creating a reputation for himself, nor was he concerned about the results. He was obedient and willingly surrendered all of his life to the service of God. As a witness for the True Light, John the Baptist’s influence transformed many lives even before Jesus’ coming. We must surrender to God’s will and let God use us to be His witnesses.

APPLICATION

  1. Know the source of our motivation. Acknowledge the deity of Christ. Accept Jesus as your Lord and Savior if you have not done so already.

  2. Be strengthened by the light. Renew yourself in God’s Word and remind yourself that it is only through Jesus that darkness can be deflected.

  3. Submit to God and His will. Whichever way the Lord is convicting you, you must surrender and let God assume responsibility.

DISCUSSION QUESTION
If Jesus is the source of your motivation, reflect on how you are strengthened and consider how you can submit to what God wants you to do.
