12 Jehoiada brought out the king’s son and put the crown on him; he presented him with a copy of the covenant and proclaimed him king. They anointed him, and the people clapped their hands and shouted, “Long live the king!”
— 2 Kings 11:12

The king’s son, Joash, was still a young boy when Jehoiada crowned him as king. Athaliah, the daughter of Ahab and Jezebel and the mother of Azariah, reigned on the throne of Judah for seven years after the death of her son.

Even though Joash was still a young boy, Jehoiada must have felt that they could not endure the reign of Athaliah any longer. And so he took steps to restore the throne to the house of David.

Athaliah’s husband was Jehoram. When Jehoram became king of Judah, he followed the idolatry of Israel instead of following the ways of his father Jehoshaphat. God was displeased with Jehoram, but He was not willing to destroy Judah because of His promise to David “to maintain a lamp for David and his descendants forever” (2 Kings 8:19).

And so we see here how God was faithful to His promise through Jehoiada the priest. God will always remain faithful to His promises, and He often does so through His servants.

God’s sovereignty does not mean that we should sit back and let God take care of all His kingdom business. God’s way is to call upon His people to partner with Him in building up His kingdom.

With respect to the Great Commission, I know that God will do the business of filling this earth with His glory. But it is my great desire to be used by Him to do so.

Father, as I look forward to our Korea mission trip, I am thankful for this opportunity to be used by You to help restore the gospel in the children and youth of Korea. Lord, I refuse to believe that our humble effort will be meaningless. No matter what happens, I trust You will use it for Your glory. May it also be for our growth and our joy. In Jesus’s name. Amen.
