3 No longer will there be any curse. The throne of God and of the Lamb will be in the city, and his servants will serve him. 4 They will see his face, and his name will be on their foreheads. 5 There will be no more night. They will not need the light of a lamp or the light of the sun, for the Lord God will give them light. And they will reign for ever and ever.

Revelation 22:3-5

This is the day that I am eagerly longing for. I believe with all my heart that I will be counted among His servants to serve Him. I will see His face, and His name will be on my forehead. Apparently, we will not need sleep in the eternal kingdom. Furthermore, we will reign together with Christ over His kingdom. Who knows what that really means or looks like, but we’ll know soon enough.

The part of this vision that excites me the most is that there will no longer be any curse. It is the curse of sin and death that is the greatest burden of our lives. Of course, we are able to taste freedom from the curse of sin and death through faith in our Lord Jesus Christ. But I get tired of dealing with the sin—the sin of others and especially my own sin. No wonder King David wrote, “For I know my transgressions, and my sin is always before me” (Psalm 51:3).

And it’s not just the sin of the world that wearies me—it’s that we live in a broken world filled with disasters, catastrophes, and diseases. I mean, I would gladly live in a world that still had disasters, catastrophes, and diseases if only there were no sin. But the promise of God is that the new world will no longer be fighting against humanity.

This past year began with a devastating earthquake that killed 475 souls. The Russia-Ukraine war continues on, and over 1M souls have been snuffed out. On Sunday, a plane crashed while landing in Jeju Island, killing 179. Hundreds of lives have been lost to severe flooding in 2024. We could go on and on and on.

And the most tragic thing is that humans have the ability and capacity to prevent many (if not most) of those deaths. But we don’t take any serious action to do so, because, as a whole, humanity values profit more than it does human life. If humanity, as a whole, valued human life more than profit, we would do whatever it takes to prevent the loss of life—any life.

But humanity simply does not have the will to save every human life. So thank God our God is not like us. Every soul is precious in His sight. If that were not the case, I would not be saved. I have nothing to offer God.

The opposite of the curse is the love of Christ. I look forward to the day when His love governs our lives and not the curse.

Father, You are the Creator of heaven and earth, the Giver of life, the Author of our salvation, the Forgiver of our sins, the Redeemer of our souls. Come quickly, Lord. But in the meantime, give me the will to fight my sinful nature. In Jesus’s name. Amen.
