17 Furthermore, a hundred and fifty Jews and officials ate at my table, as well as those who came to us from the surrounding nations. 18 Each day one ox, six choice sheep and some poultry were prepared for me, and every ten days an abundant supply of wine of all kinds. In spite of all this, I never demanded the food allotted to the governor, because the demands were heavy on these people. 19 Remember me with favor, my God, for all I have done for these people.
— Nehemiah 5:17-19

Nehemiah presents for us a model of leadership. A model leader demonstrates servanthood. He provides abundantly for those who serve with him and, yet, does not demand any of the privileges that he could claim. He recognizes unhealthy and unfair practices among the people and calls them to account for their behaviors. He also recognizes the burdens that the people bear and sets an example of sympathy and consideration for others to follow. He also recognizes the threats to the community and establishes procedures for their defense. And he recognizes that all of their needs would be provided by the hand of God.

Nehemiah was a model of what the kings of Israel were supposed to be like. And he presents a model for me of what pastors are supposed to be like, as well. May I live in the fear of the LORD, as he did and be able to say, “Remember me with favor, my God, for all I have done for these people.” In Jesus’s name. Amen.
