12 “By day you led them with a pillar of cloud, and by night with a pillar of fire to give them light on the way they were to take.

13 “You came down on Mount Sinai; you spoke to them from heaven. You gave them regulations and laws that are just and right, and decrees and commands that are good. 14 You made known to them your holy Sabbath and gave them commands, decrees and laws through your servant Moses. 15 In their hunger you gave them bread from heaven and in their thirst you brought them water from the rock; you told them to go in and take possession of the land you had sworn with uplifted hand to give them.”
— Nehemiah 9:12-15

First, there is deliverance, then there is the word of God, then food and water, and then mission.

If God had not delivered us from sin and death, where would we be? We would be happily frolicking on this express train to hell, doing whatever it is we wanted to do to our heart’s content, but filling up our souls with death. But God does deliver us.

If God had not revealed to us His word, where would we be? We would be walking around blind every day, always filled with doubt, not knowing God, worshiping every idol that tickles our fancy, not know who we are, not having any meaning, purpose, or significance in this world. But God revealed to us His very word.

If God had not provided for us our daily needs, where would we be? We would be vicious and desperate, biting and scratching for survival and always wondering, Where is God? But God provides for our daily needs.

If God had not told us to go and commissioned us to fill the earth with His glory in Jesus’s name, where would we be? We would be sitting idly on our tushes, waiting for Jesus to come back and spoon-feed us as we sit idly on our tushes in heaven. But God gave us an inheritance and a commission.

God has given us everything we need to live and thrive in His kingdom and glory in His name. So why do we ever live our lives doing whatever it is we want to do, chasing after every idol that tickles our fancy, biting and scratching for luxuries and comfort we already have, and sitting idly on our tushes waiting for a version of Jesus who will never come back?

Our salvation is the opposite of insanity.

Father, forgive me for my own insanity. Fill my heart with the knowledge of You. My hope is You. Transform my understanding so that my life, my very life, may glorify You and You alone. Cure whatever trace of insanity resides in my heart so that I may walk boldly, confidently, powerfully, totally dependent upon You, in Your kingdom. In Jesus’s name. Amen.
