Praise Him

6 min read

1 Praise awaits you, our God, in Zion; to you our vows will be fulfilled.

2 You who answer prayer, to you all people will come.

3 When we were overwhelmed by sins, you forgave our transgressions.

4 Blessed are those you choose and bring near to live in your courts! We are filled with the good things of your house, of your holy temple.

Psalm 65:1-4

God is worthy of all praise, not because He answers our prayers, not because He forgave us our sins, not because He has saved us and made us heirs of His glorious inheritance. God is worthy of all praise, because God is God, and He alone is worthy.

Yet, He does answer our prayers, He forgives us our sins, and He does save us so that we have a share in His glorious inheritance. Because God is good.

The praise we offer to God is not a transaction, either, but a response to His goodness. If we do not praise God, it is because we are not understanding the weight, the blessing, and the joy of what He has saved us from and what He has saved us for; we are not experiencing the touch of His hand in answer to our prayers; we may still be holding on to the good things of this world instead of our heavenly reward.

God commands that we praise Him, not because God is an egomaniac. God commands that we praise Him so that we might be drawn into His love, and so that we might understand His love.

Praise be to God the Father. Praise be to God the Spirit. And praise be to God the Son. In His precious name. Amen.
