22 When Joram saw Jehu he asked, “Have you come in peace, Jehu?”

“How can there be peace,” Jehu replied, “as long as all the idolatry and witchcraft of your mother Jezebel abound?”
— 2 Kings 9:22

The universalist unitarians believe that the key to peace and harmony is for people of all different faiths and religions to all get along. They are guided by seven principles:

  1. The inherent worth and dignity of every person;

  2. Justice, equity and compassion in human relations;

  3. Acceptance of one another and encouragement to spiritual growth in congregations;

  4. A free and responsible search for truth and meaning;

  5. The right of conscience and the use of the democratic process within congregations and in society at large;

  6. The goal of world community with peace, liberty, and justice for all;

  7. Respect for the interdependent web of all existence of which all are a part.

The unitarian universalists talk about God, but members are free to believe whatever they choose about God—even that He doesn’t exist—as long as they uphold the seven principles. In a sense, God to them is humanity achieving the seven principles.

And so, without having any concept of an absolutely holy and righteous God, they also deny the Christian doctrine of original sin—that all people are born into a sinful nature. In their estimation, every person has the power in themselves to overcome evil.

All of this sounds very appealing to the modern and post-modern heart that believes science and technology can solve all human problems. But can the U-Us so easily ignore Jehu’s question?

They must be among the most self-righteous people on this planet. That is to say, they may be very nice folks, but their minds must break when they come face to face with anyone who is evil—or even the slightest bit selfish. And their minds must really break whenever they come face to face with evil or selfishness within themselves.

I mean, what happens when two U-U men love the same woman and the woman loves someone else, or two U-U women love the same man and the man loves someone else? Or when two U-Us are up for the same promotion with stock bonuses, or whatever? What do they do with all that?

Once again, we are reminded that every belief and religion in this world, except for Christianity, would have us humans working our way into the kingdom of God. Christianity is the only faith that tells us—with historical evidence to support the claims—that God came to us in His Son Jesus, so that we might enter the kingdom of God through faith in Him.

Why do human being insist on having to work so hard for things that we cannot attain on our own?

Father, I thank You for coming down to us to save us. Your truth is truly the only truth that makes any sense in the end. Would You help us to see Your truth so clearly. With Your truth, make us witness in this world that needs Jesus so much. In His name. Amen.
