His Powerful Word

THE MAIN IDEA
Jesus Christ is the Lord of all things, so Jesus must reign as Lord over our lives.

THE WORD OF GOD GIVES US LIFE
Life would not exist without Jesus Christ. First, Hebrews reminds us that Jesus is the Son of God, the second Person of our Triune God (Father, Son, and Holy Spirit; the trinity of God is one thing that makes Christianity unique among all religions). As such, He is God. Hebrews also reminds us that it was through the Son that the entire universe was created (verse 2; John 1:1-2). What this means for us personally is that it is through Jesus that every single one of us exists (Psalm 139:13). And finally, Hebrews reminds us that God actively sustains all things by His powerful Word, who is Jesus Christ (verse 3; Colossians 1:17). The Word of God, Jesus Christ, gives us life, and without Him, there would be no life. In fact, there would be no existence. But with Christ, there IS life. And we CAN have that life, the best life that we could ever possibly imagine. That is His powerful word to us.

THE WORD OF GOD GIVES US HOPE
Life would be hopeless without Jesus Christ. As followers of Jesus Christ, we have a hope that will never, ever fail us and never be taken away. Because God has spoken to us, because God has revealed His heart and His plan to us, because God does not lie and does not change His mind, because God acts to fulfill His promises to us, we have this enduring hope (Numbers 23:19). Through the prophets, God revealed His covenant promises to us (Genesis 12:2-3; Jeremiah 30:22). Through the prophets, God also revealed that His covenant promises would be fulfilled in His Anointed One (Messiah) and that the Messiah would atone for all of our sins (Isaiah 53:4-6). God’s Anointed One is Jesus the Christ. And through His sacrifice on the cross, Jesus has provided complete purification for all of our sins— past, present, and future. Therefore, there is no condemnation for those who put their faith and hope in Christ Jesus (Romans 8:1-2).

THE WORD OF GOD GIVES US PURPOSE
Life has no purpose, life has no meaning, without Jesus Christ. The question of the meaning and purpose of life is one that every human being struggles with. It is the question that the word of God gives us the answer to. There are two things in this world that make every life meaningless: evil and death (Ecclesiastes). So if God really is who He claims to be in the Bible, then God must do away with evil and death. And God will most definitely do away with evil and death once and for all time when Jesus Christ returns. The fact that Jesus “sits at the right hand of the Majesty in heaven” (verse 3) means that Jesus has supreme authority over all the universe, something that Jesus explicitly pointed out to His disciples right before He ascended to the right hand of the Majesty in heaven (Matthew 28:18). Then Jesus gives His disciples the Great Commission (Matthew 28:19-20). This tells us the reason that Jesus’s authority over all the universe is important and relevant for our lives right here and right now. It is to carry the good news of Jesus Christ to the ends of the earth. Of the five purposes that God has ordained for our lives (worship, fellowship, discipleship, service, and evangelism/missions), evangelism/missions is the one purpose we will not need to fulfill in heaven. It is the one purpose that God has reserved for us to do exclusively here on this earth.

DISCUSSION QUESTION
What are some ways that people try to find meaning in their lives apart from Jesus?
