Together in Support
MAIN IDEA -
We’re all susceptible to fall into the temptation of our heavy burdens or sin therefore we must come together in support of one another to remain in doing good especially to those within the church. This means we must be humble, share our vulnerabilities, stay accountable, and endure as we continue to love others.
Paul gives 4 instructions on how we can come together in support of one another.
INSTRUCTION TO RESTORE
The spiritually mature believers have a responsibility to restore those who have fallen into sin with a spirit of love and humility. Paul continues from Galatians chapter 5 where he addresses the walking in the Spirit, directing those who are spiritually strong to help others recover from sin without judgment or pride. The church is a place of restoration, akin to how a car would come to the service department of a dealership rather than the showroom. This process should be marked by humility and love, aiming to bring the fallen brother or sister back into fellowship rather than condemning them.
INSTRUCTION TO REINFORCE
Paul emphasizes the importance of mutual support towards one another in the church. We are to carry each other’s heavy burdens, like the weight of sin or temptation, as a way to fulfill the law of Christ, loving God and others. Paul warns against pride, reminding us that thinking we can handle these burdens alone is self-deception. We ought to rely on one another to help. We must focus on our own actions without comparing ourselves to others for each person has their own personal load, a responsibility they can manage but some burdens are too heavy and require communal support.
INSTRUCTION TO REAP
The decisions we make and the actions we take are consequential. What we sow, we will ultimately reap. Paul warns us not to be deceived by our own hearts, which can lead to self-deception about the gravity of sin for God is not mocked. Those who live to please their sinful desires will face the consequences of corruption and those who live by the Spirit will experience the blessings of eternal life. Paul encourages us to take this principle seriously and to support one another, aiming for a Christian life that reflects living and walking in the Spirit.
INSTRUCTION TO REMAIN
Paul encourages us to continue and persevere in doing good. He reminds us that we will reap a reward at the proper time if we do not give up. He urges us to continue living and walking in the Spirit and to actively do good unto others, particular fellow believers. Despite the challenges and weariness that may come, the effort of serving others with love will yield eternal blessings of joy.
