Dirty Feet

14 “Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another’s feet. 15 I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you. 16 Very truly I tell you, no servant is greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him. 17 Now that you know these things, you will be blessed if you do them.”
John 13:14-17
It still boggles my mind that Jesus shared the Passover meal with the one who betrayed Him and even washed his feet. It’s one thing to humble oneself and serve one’s peers. It’s one thing to humble oneself and serve those who are culturally accepted as “lesser” in social standing. But it is unfathomable to humble oneself and serve someone that you know has betrayed you (or will betray you).
It takes a perspective and a worldview that is beyond human experience. And that is why it can only be possible with faith in Jesus Christ. Every other religion requires us to work in order to become “great” like God. Christianity is the only religion where God humbled Himself and served us so that He would be like the least of us. But in so doing, Jesus proved that He is greater than all.
Father, give me a gospel worldview and perspective so that I can see and understand that I am no better and no worse than any other person. But that by humbling myself and serving the “least” of these, all of these, I become like my Lord in His greatness. In Jesus’s name. Amen.
