The Revolution of Religion

MAIN IDEA
Jesus brought upon this world the greatest revolution, the revolution of religion. Religion is not about rituals but it is about relationships, beginning with our relationship with God. The greatest of all the laws is to love God and the second is similar, love one another.

THE CATALYST OF THE REVOLUTION
The law of the Old Testament reveals to us our sinful state. It gives us direction to the Savior because we are unable to ever be in complete compliance with all the laws of the Old Testament. The only way we can achieve complete righteousness is through a different way, not by our own abilities. We are all sinners in need of a Savior to rescue us from sin, therefore Jesus came to this world and brought a revolution of change through the gospel.

THE CORE OF THE REVOLUTION
We must love God with all of our heart, soul, and mind. It must be a committed and unconditional love for our God. We must also love one another just as ourselves. We love others because God loved us first.

THE COMPLETION OF THE REVOLUTION
The most important law is to love God and the second most important is to love one another. Every single commandment can be summarized by either one of the two main commandments to love God and to love one another.

Quote - Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. (Stride toward Freedom)
“Agape is not weak, passive love. It is love in action. Agape is love seeking to preserve and create community. It is an insistence on community even when one seeks to break it. Agape is a willingness to sacrifice in the interest of mutuality. Agape is willingness to go to any length to restore community. It doesn’t stop at the first mile, but it goes the second mile to restore community. It is willingness to forgive, not seven times, but seventy times seven to restore community. The cross is the eternal expression of the length to which God will go in order to restore broken community.”

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS

  • Have we been focusing more on rituals rather than relationships in the church? How can we shift our focus and become more mindful of relationships?

  • How can we love God with all our heart, mind, and soul?

  • How can we love one another just as ourselves?
