Wardrobe of the Believer
MAIN IDEA
The Apostle Peter writes to persecuted new Christians throughout Asia Minor, encouraging them to humbly submit to God and His mighty hands, resist the Devil, and faithfully trust that God will give them strength to endure trials within their lives.
THE CLOTHING OF HUMILITY
Peter calls upon the younger men to submit to their elders. We don’t exactly know why he specifically calls upon the younger men to submit, but from my personal experience, I know that we, as younger individuals, tend to be restless in our stubbornness. This can possibly lead to a condescending attitude towards the spiritual leaders God has placed in our lives. After addressing the younger men, Peter then makes a plea to all to be clothed in humility. We ought to wear a garment of humility, identifying our servant hearts as believers of Christ. Finally, Peter calls upon us to willingly submit and place ourselves under the mighty hand of God.
THE CLOTHING OF HEEDFULNESS
We must be humble enough to acknowledge that we cannot resist the Devil on our own. We must be sober and alert, for he can attack at any time, pouncing without warning. We must never think that we are above or powerful enough in our own ability to overcome sin or resist the temptation from the evil one. We must always be attentive and stay within the boundaries that God has placed in our lives – not to restrain us, but to protect us from the Devil’s backyard.
THE CLOTHING OF HOPE
Our hope is found in the faith of the gospel. In the gospel, we find strength, comfort, peace, and power. Peter reminds the readers of his letters that they are not alone in their steadfastness; believers throughout Asia Minor are also remaining faithful despite their sufferings.
